The Birth of Vyper - Mythic Supers Game - Session 0 (Part 2)

Whew, that's a longer title than I had planned, but certain things had to be said, or in this case, typed.

Here's Part 2 of Session 0, this time with my training scene for my main hero Vyper. And since he is my main hero, he actually gets more than one scene.

But first, the character's background. Since I created this character in the past, I already know his background. I'm just using this game as his early years.

The hero known as Vyper was born John Mason Willard. His father, Charles Willard, who owned Wylltech, boasted that his company developed cutting edge technology decades ahead of its competitors. Unfortunately, he did so by cutting corners, bending regulations, and outright ignoring the safety of others.

One day, John was at Wylltech working during the summer before college when his father tricked him into taking part in an experiment, seriously injuring John. When his mother found out, she tried to go to the police, but Charles arranged for her to have an 'accident.' Learning this, Charles' assistant, Mr. Ashby, faked the boy's death, claiming he has disintegrated in the experiment. Then he hid the boy in a cabin far in the country.

Not long after, John realized the experiment had given him powers. At first, he sent objects flying against the wall and found himself walking into, well, nothing. With Ashby's help, he learned he could create and affect force fields. Ashby arranged to change John's name to Mason Dean, and gave him the resources to learn about his powers.

Mason, and eventually Vyper, is sort of a weaker version of Invisible Woman. I'm trying to tweak the use of his powers so he's different enough.

We'll start there.

Mason has just learned his can float in the air. He's going to see if he can hover or even fly. At Level T, Mason's Heart is +2. Since he's never used this power, except to hover a few inches off the ground, we'll set the Difficulty at -2.

(Q)  Does Mason succeed in flying over the house? (50/50)  No (but barely)

Mason managed to lift off the ground, and it looked like he would make it over the house. However, his feet caught the rooftop and after flipping through the air, he crashed into the ground.

(Q)  Is Mason hurt? (Likely)  Yes - but with a Random Event.

Groaning, Mason rolled into a sitting position and massaged his sprain ankle. This would take some time.

Now let's find out what happened next;

(Random Event)  "Negative," "Environment"

Mason shook his head. "At least it's not raining." Moments later, drops from the sky began soaking him. Standing, he grumbled, "I deserved that," and went inside.

A week later, he tried again.

(Q)  Does Mason succeed this time in flying over the house?  (Still 50/50)  Yes - with Random Event.

This time Mason flew completely over the cabin, though stumbling as he hit the ground. Going to have to work on landing, he thought.

 (Random Event)  "New," "NPC"

It's too early for him to face a crook or super villain specially since only Ashby is supposed to know about him. I'll roll to see if I can get an idea of who or what he faces.

(Description)  "Nature," "Large."

(Q)  Is it a bear? (Likely, just because it's the first thing I thought of)  Yes.

Hearing a rustling in the trees, Mason looked up and saw a bear emerging into the clearing. The animal eyed him and continued closer.

(Q)  Does the bear attack? (Likely)  Yes.

Increasing its pace, the bear lunged forward, possibly perceiving Mason as an easy meal.

This is his first Clash. Now I don't want Mason to kill the bear, just drive it off, but it does give him the chance to test his powers. But first, we need to get an idea of the bear's abilities. Fortunately, we don't need to know everything about the animal. Mason won't be interacting with it, and out in the open, sneaking is out of the question. I figure Body, Agility, and Heart are all I need.

Opening the Simplified Creature Craft rules, I'll make these a few Fate questions.

(Q) Is the bear's Body a +3 (Likely since it's pretty strong)  No (Okay so +2 instead.)

(Q)  Is the bear's Agility +2 (Likely)  Yes.

(Q) Is the bear's Heart -1 (Likely. The animals has no powers, nor much defense against them)  No.

So this gives me for Abilities: Body +2, Agility +2, Heart -2.

The bear is lunging forward, so it's using Agility as an Effect. If it succeeds, it'll be horrifyingly within melee range. Mason will use his powers (Heart) to hopefully push the animal away (Also Effect).

(Clash) Does Mason succeed in driving off the bear? (The bear's +2 vs. Mason's +2 means 50/50)  Yes.

Holding out both hands, Mason sent out a bubble that floated in the air. The bear slammed headlong into the bubble and fell backward, shaking its head.

(Q) Does the bear run away? (Unlikely, I mean it is hungry, right?)  Yes.

Getting back to its feet, the animal hightailed it back into the woods. Falling to his knees, Mason gasped for air while fighting off a panic attack.

"You went toe to toe with a bear?" asked Mr. Ashby. "What the hell were you thinking?"

"Well," Mason answered, "I had a lovely, enthralled vision of not getting eating. What did you think?"

Ashby shook his head. "It must've gotten through the security fence. Maybe your powers damaged something. Try to be a little more careful."

"Well it's not like i'm trying to destroy the place," Mason responded, "but I'll do what I can to avoid more encounters with big teeth."

After some more months of training, Mason finally decided to return to the city. Mr. Ashby arranged an apartment for him and he got a job writing for a local paper while also attending a few college classes.

So we got Mason into the city. Now we need to turn him into an actual superhero. I'm going to set up a scenario for him first.

One day while walking home from work, Mason was dragged into an alley by a mugger. Not wanting to reveal his powers, Mason played along, receiving a black eye in exchange for his wallet. Returning to his apartment, he realized he didn't have to take that. Going through some gear he had brought with him from the cabin, he found some dark green clothing (possibly a lab suit), along with a pair of yellow goggles. Putting them all on, he went back out that night to find the man who stole his wallet. Floating along the rooftops, he returned to the alley where he had been mugged.

(Q) Is the same mugger there? (Likely)  Yes - but with Random Event.

(Random Event)  "NPC, "Danger."

Looking down into the alley, he noticed the mugger threatening someone else.

(Q)  Is it a male?  (50/50)  No.

(Q)  Is he using a gun?  (Likely)  No.

The mugger shoved a knife against the woman's face. "Your purse, or I'll wreck that pretty face." Frowning, Mason decided to act. But first, he had to reach ground level.

Mason is going to float down to the ground, but he's also going to use his invisibility (He's had time to practice). This means a -1 to his Heart for using 2 powers at once.

(Q)  Does Mason succeed in floating while invisible to the ground?  (+1 means Likely)  Yes.

Silently, Mason lowered himself into the alley, moving towards the mugger and woman.

(Q)  Does the mugger have the same stats as a crook? (Likely because it's be easier for me)  Yes.

So +1 Agility, -1 Heart, 0 for everything else.

Since the mugger is holding the woman at knife-point, a damaging attack might not be the best idea. Instead, Mason will go for an Effect, trying to push the mugger down, hopefully separating him from the woman. This will cancel his invisibility and reveal himself to the mugger.

Mason has +2 Heart, while the mugger has -1 Heart.

(Clash)  Does Mason knock down the mugger? (+3 means Near Certain)  Yes.

A Blast of wind slammed into the two, knocking them down, The man looked up to see the masked figure standing before him, while the woman got up but stood frozen in place.

"Does this look like an art museum!" asked Mason. "Run!"

At those words, the woman bolted out of sight.

"What are you?" The mugger slowly regained his feet, knife pointed forward.

Forcing his voice to sound deeper while also masking his fear, Mason spoke. "You're done threatening people."

Before the fight, I need to know what the mugger does.

(Q)  Does the mugger fight melee? (Likely as he's not stupid enough to throw his knife.)  No (I stand corrected.)

The mugger will throw his knife at Mason (Damage - Agility +1). Mason will use enough force field blast, this time to incapacitate the other man (Damage - Heart +2).

(Clash)  Does Mason win the Clash?  (+1 means Likely)  Yes.

The knife bounced harmlessly off the force field bubble, and Mason sent the mugger flying backward, slamming him into some trash cans.

The damage from Mason's attack is his Heart, which is +2. The mugger's toughness (Body) is 0. Therefore, he suffers -1 RS. At this point, the smartest thing for him to do is to run.

(Q) Does the mugger flee?  (Very Likely)  No.

Getting to his feet, the mugger raised his fists. "Let's do this."

The mugger will try to fight melee. Normally this means using his Body 0. However, he has the -1 RS, making it Body -1. Mason will use his power again.

(Clash)  Does Mason win the Clash?  (+2 Heart vs. -1 Body means +3 or Very Likely)  X-Yes.

Mason sent the mugger back again into the trash cans, this time with less effort.

The mugger suffers another -1 RS, but with the X-Yes result, it becomes -2, for a total of -3 RS.

(Incap)  Is the mugger Incapacitated?  (Mason's +2 vs. the mugger's Body 0 +3 RS for +5)  Yes.

Walking over, Mason noticed the other man lying groaning and covered in garbage. Reaching into the man's pockets, Mason searched for his wallet.

(Q)  Does he find it  (50/50).  X-Yes.

Locating his wallet, Mason also found all his money still there as well. Hearing sirens approaching (The woman must have gotten help), he escaped the alley.

The next morning, word was out around the city of the woman saved from a mugger by a masked figure. Because of his clothing and sneaky style, the newspaper dubbed him The Vyper. Mason really didn't care about character names, but maybe this new identity, along with his new powers, could help him get back at his father and his company.

And with that, a new, yet reluctant hero, is born.

I think with training over, I'll flash forward a bit and promote my characters all to Level 1. Also, you may have noticed that I have 2 heroes but only 1 villain. Actually, I have created several villains; you just haven't seen them yet.

Session 1 coming soon . . .
